The Hecht House is situated in the very heart of the Rappaport Center. It was this geographical location, inter alia, which proved to be a deciding factor in the decision to turn it into a center of culture and art, which has a wide range of interesting events on offer, including exhibitions, concerts, all sorts of lectures (including ones on religion), study groups and so on and so forth.
The house was built in 1893 and was donated by the Rothschild family to the municipality of Haifa for the enjoyment of the citizens of this city. In 1959, the house was turned into a center in which of all sorts of different aspects of culture could be studied. These have been enjoyed by the citizens of Haifa over a number of years. In 2001, comprehensive reconstruction and restoration work on the house was commenced. In fact it underwent a total face-lift.
Those who are contributing to the extensive face-lift and repair work on the house include the Haifa Fund and it is being paid for by the Reuben and Edith Hecht Fund, as well as by the municipality of Haifa. One of the outcomes of the face-lift and restoration work is that the name of the Center has been changed from ‘The Rothschild House'; to ‘The Hecht House' in honor of the late Reuben and Edith Hecht z'l.
