While fresh Roman troops march towards Jerusalem, Jewish rebels make their way towards Herod's mountain fortress: Masada. Amidst the turmoil and almost killed, a fierce young rebel leader, Ben Ya-ir meets Claudia, the beautiful daughter of the Roman general.
The rebels later capture Claudia. She is taken to Masada where she is to be interrogated by Ben Ya-ir. Her clever and fearless answers ignite deep feelings in the young leader and he is deafened to the stern warnings of his friends. The two fall deeply in love.
Meanwhile a Roman delegation arrives. The brutal General Flavius, recalled from the fronts of Brittany, attempts to negotiate a false peace. The rebels see through the deception and his offer is rejected. "We don't give a penny for that song', the rebels say. The visit of her father leads to a heated debate between the two lovers which is interrupted by the Roman attack. The Romans are defeated in this first wave.
In Rome Caesar is outraged to hear of the victory won by the Masada inhabitants. On Masada the young rebel leader tries to convince Claudia to return to her father. "We will not withstand another attack, you can still escape'. Claudia pleads with him to let her
stay,' where you die I will die' she cries.' Where you are I buried I'll be buried! Your God is my God! Your people are my people!"
Knowing the end is near, the two lovers burry a scroll as a message of hope to future generations. (An ancient writing was in fact discovered on Masada in 1962. Experts believe these writings to be the last farewell from the 1000 inhabitants of Masada).
When the Roman legionnaires storm Masada they discover all the families on the fortress dead. The general finds his daughter Claudia among the dead. “My brutal task has ended,” he cries, ”you were right my daughter, I was wrong”. In that moment the words of the prophet written in the buried scroll are fulfilled: "the Spirit of Life is breathed into all these slain and they are raised and stand upon their feet: a vast army. A Resurrection Army!
